‘I Am a Danfo Driver, Suo,’ was one of the Nigerian songs selected for Phat Girlz and ‘i’ the lead single from their sophomore album also led them on a European tour. Their lives changed forever and they never remained the same.
While reports had it that they got undercut for their first album, they finally cut ties with Cornerstone Records after the release of Danfo Travel. In 2014, they told Vanguard that Cornerstone Records permitted their marketer to pirate their albums and that Cornerstone Records didn’t promote them enough.
After they left Cornerstone, they released their third album, New Chapter. It didn’t match the success of their previous two albums. The lead single, ‘Meshango‘ didn’t crack it.
But before went on a hiatus, they had other hits like, ‘Iya Mi,’ ‘Na God,’ ‘Sensimilla,‘ and ‘No Matter What Dem Do.’
In honesty, tracing the impact and influence of Mad Melon and Mountain Black is quite hard. One can simply not pin the success of every patois-talking, ragga-singing Nigerian act down to them.
However, the present is only a reflection of the past or at least, an evolution of it. Pop music is a product of the experiences of any society over a period of time. The sound that aided the ‘Danfo Drivers’ was avant-garde and very rude.
After Mad Melon and Mountain Black, two-man groups like, X-Project and Zule Zoo embodied that avant-garde and very rude sound that you can’t help but be attracted to.
Asides that, Mad Melon and Mountain Black also continued the trend of socio-political music that Ajegunle championed. Currently, Patoranking and Prettyboy D-O create those brands of socially relevant and politically charged dancehall music. Like Ajegunle in the 2000s, Agege’s offsprings now document the story of inner-city Nigeria.
If members of the alte demography were going to dress in 2019, it would probably reflect something that Mad Melon and Mountain Black helped popularize; the funny necklaces, oversized sports outfits, head warmers, durags, funny shades and so forth.
